The Collected Poems of Alma Hobbs Fuclés Coming Soon
Alma was born in San Antonio, TX in 1951. She was one of ten children (7 girls, 3 boys). She attended St. Phillips College, and began working for the then current city attorney. After some years of exploring different paths, she settled into public relations and fundraising-a perfect fit for a fearless public speaker. She was an amazing single mom, raising her only daughter in Phoenix, AZ, and and years later, spoiling her only grandson. Through it all, her faith in God never wavered.
Alma began writing at a young age, and began performing her work on stage in the 70's. Standing 6'4", she modeled for Frost Brothers and other retailers in downtown San Antonio. After relocating to Phoenix, AZ in the late 80's, she worked in public relations and fundraising for more than 20 years-but she never stopped writing, and her love for poetry remained fierce her entire life.
As her daughter, I have certainly been influenced by my mother's style of poetry, and inspired by her elegant, yet realist perspective of the world around her. Her coming of age in the South during the civil rights era informed much of her work, which can be gritty and frank at times, then quite unexpectedly-tender and sentimental. This website is my tribute to the evocative voice that was-and still is-my mother, Alma Hobbs Fuclés.
